Rich Shiga is a Principal at ZGF Architects, an award-winning architecture and interior design firm with offices in Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Canada, and Washington, DC. As a Project Architect and Project Manager for the last 31 years, Rich is one of ZGF’s most versatile players. He has led over 20 healthcare projects requiring complex and creative design solutions and a variety of multi-phase projects at scales less than 1,000 SF to more than 450,000 SF. Rich’s utilization of Evidence-Based Design and lean design principles have resulted in the successful delivery of a full range of healthcare facilities including new hospitals, highly specialized and innovative outpatient and inpatient programs, and master planning for future campus expansion and improved connectivity. He has taught Advanced Design Studio and other architectural courses at the University of Oregon, Portland State University, Temple University, and the University of Pennsylvania and combines his breadth of experience and his interest in teaching to act as a mentor internally at ZGF, taking on the role of an advisor for ZGF’s Mentor Program and staffing his project teams with people looking for guidance in professional growth opportunities. Outside of the office Rich is an active member of the community, volunteering since 2014 as a Certified Member of Multnomah County Sheriff Search and Rescue locating and recovering lost or injured subjects in the wilds of Oregon.
